OFURO. Water in its most beautiful form
There is a lot of precise handwork in this Japanese wooden bathtub: selecting the wood, measuring, sawing, milling, assembling it in a steel hoop for testing, joining the base and sides, clamping, milling the notch in the base, inserting and sealing the base and - over many hours - sanding.
We produce the bathtub in a medium-sized carpentry business in the Palatinate. Our production partner's team has a lot of experience with manufacturing techniques for wine barrel construction. This helps immensely with our ecological goal of using as little chemicals as possible in the form of glue or solvents. This is why the bottom of the OFURO for MAOMI is carefully compacted with rye flour paste and reed leaves. The latter has been used by humans since ancient times as a building and roofing material due to its stable structure and water-repellent properties.
Between Tradition and Modernity
“Ofuro” is Japanese and means “private bath”. The “o” before “furo” is used in Japanese to give meaning to the word and respect to the ritual of bathing as a whole. The ofuro is a testament to a traditional Japanese philosophy that sees bathing as much more than “just” a hygienic procedure.
Three continental plates meet beneath Japan's islands, which means that there are around 25,000 hot springs spread across the country. This is one of the reasons why the Japanese have a long-standing relationship with "their" water and the bathing culture that goes with it. For example, people wash themselves thoroughly before getting into the bath! In the 19th century, this was traditional with bowls and a rub of herbs, and later with soap.
Convincing indoors and outdoors: Design and extravagance in everyday life
The OFURO from MAOMI translates this Japanese tradition into the modern age. It impresses with its functional design and also scores points with the highest aesthetic demands. The soft cedar wood, whose essential oils have a harmonizing and calming effect on the body and mind, is beautifully sanded by hand and precisely clamped into three high-quality bands made of rust-proof stainless steel wire. Thanks to its low weight of only 50 kilograms, the OFURO is easy to move and therefore saves space. It is also ideal in summer as a mobile outdoor hot tub, as a high shower tray or as an elegant sauna/plunge pool. It is cleaned with the brush provided. Additional or chemical cleaning agents are not required.
